Citizens of Mercer,
At our May 27th public hearing, we heard public comments on the removal of the shed and cement pad at the Mercer Community Center. We are under a tight time-frame to get this project done before the pavers come to pave the parking lot which was approved at town meeting. We were hopeful that we could hold a Special Town Meeting referendum vote (you would cast a ballot on this subject) on Tuesday, June 10th, piggybacking on the MSAD/RSU 54 election at no additional cost to the town. Upon further investigation, that is not possible within our current law requirements to call a referendum election and meet our time constraints. Although we could still hold a Special (open) Town Meeting, time is still an issue. In order to move forward with what we feel is in the best interest of the town, we have decided to move forward with the removal of the shed and pad project, taking the funds from the revenues generated from the MCC rentals as authorized in Article 8 of the 2025 Annual Town Meeting warrant. Traditionally, we like to bring such matters before the voters but in this particular circumstance, we feel obligated to move forward as parking lot paving has already been scheduled. We hope you understand and support our decision.
